It is one of the largest cities of the American continent. More than 6 million inhabitants live in the city. It lies in the middle of the Central Valley. On the eastern side, it is bordered by the main chain of the Andes reaching a height of 6000 m. The location of Santiago in The ring of fire is the cause of frequent earthquakes. The city was founded in 1541. The oldest buildings date back to colonial times. The Plaza de Armas de Santiago is the most visited by tourists. According to the National Geographic magazine, the Mercado Central is one of the ten best in the world. The symbol of modern Santiago is the part called Sanhattan, where most of the modern buildings, especially skyscrapers, are located. The city is the main destination for tourists visiting Chile.
