The region has been inhabited by Berber farmers since the Neolithic. The city was founded in 1070 by Emir Abu Bakr ibn Umar as the imperial capital of the Almoravid Empire. The city's red walls built by Ali ibn Yusuf in the 12th century and other buildings built later from red sandstone gave the city the nickname "The Red City". It became the cultural, religious and commercial center of the Maghreb. Marrakech includes an old walled city full of vendors and their stalls. This Medina district is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marrakech has the largest traditional market (souk) in Morocco and Jemaa el-Fnaa is the busiest square in Africa.
